Abstract
Letter distinction ability is a basic skill that is very important in learning to read and write, especially for students with special needs who often have difficulty recognizing, distinguishing, and pronouncing letters. Barriers that are still often encountered include difficulty in recognizing letters, distinguishing between similar letters, and pronouncing letters. Letter discrimination ability is a very important basic skill in reading and writing, especially for special needs students who often have difficulty recognizing, distinguishing, and pronouncing letters. Obstacles that are still often encountered are uncertainty in pronouncing consonants and inconsistency in distinguishing between capital and small letters. This condition has an impact on low self-confidence and hinders the development of early literacy in students. Therefore, this study aims to describe the results of the analysis of the letter discrimination abilities of students with special needs through the use of ScrapSclupt media and mnemonic methods at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang.
This study used a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of six students with special needs, namely three students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), one student with dyslexia, one slow learner, and one student with multiple disabilities. This research was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. Data validity was obtained through triangulation techniques, namely comparing the results of observations, interviews with special assistant teachers, and documentation of student development. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The results showed that the use of ScrapSclupt media and mnemonic methods helped students with special needs gradually improve their letter recognition skills. Students showed progress in recognizing letter sounds, pronouncing vowels and consonants, visually distinguishing similar letters, and reading syllables and simple words. Although there were still limitations in some students, particularly in pronouncing consonants and using capital letters, in general there was an increase in students' understanding and confidence in basic literacy learning. Thus, ScrapSclupt media and mnemonic methods can be used as alternatives for multisensory learning that supports inclusive education in elementary schools.
