Abstract
Background: Sleep quality is an important factor in athletes' recovery and performance. Badminton players require optimal physical fitness to achieve maximum performance. Studies show that 28-50% of athletes experience sleep problems that can affect physical fitness. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and physical fitness in badminton athletes at PB Kober, Malang City. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design with a correlational quantitative approach. The study sample consisted of 32 active badminton athletes selected through purposive sampling. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, while physical fitness was measured using the Beep Test to assess VO₂Max. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The majority of respondents (90.6%) were male, with the dominant age being 21 years old (53.2%). The results showed that 78% of athletes had poor sleep quality (PSQI score >5), and 86.2% of male athletes fell into the 'unfit' fitness category, with VO₂Max values ranging from 27.6-36 ml/kg/min. Spearman correlation tests showed a significant positive relationship between sleep quality and physical fitness (r = 0.393; p = 0.026), meaning that the worse the sleep quality, the lower the VO₂Max values tended to be. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and physical fitness in badminton athletes at PB Kober Malang City, with a weak to moderate correlation strength. Sleep quality management needs to be considered in athlete training programs to improve physical fitness and performance.
