Abstract
Background : Globally, an estimated 11-21 million people are infected with typhoid fever, resulting in 128,000-161,000 deaths annually. Typhoid fever is an acute small intestinal infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, and antibiotics are the primary of therapy.
Objective : To determine the pattern of antibiotic use in typhoid fever patients at RSUD R.T. Notopuro Sidoarjo, including dosage regimen and duration of therapy.
Method : This research used a descriptive observational design with a retrospective
approach. Data were collected from the medical records of 41 typhoid fever patients who received antibiotic therapy during the period January 2023 to December 2024.
Result and Conclusion : Antibiotics were administered as monotherapy in 47 patients (80%), two-drug combination therapy in 5 patients (8%), and switch therapy in 7 patients (12%). The most common monotherapy was a third-generation cephalosporin in 24 patients, with ceftriaxone (2x1g)iv used in 14 patients. The most common two-drug combinations were chloramphenicol + third-generation cephalosporin and third-generation cephalosporin + fluoroquinolone, each in 2 patients. There were 7 switch patterns, each involving 1 patient. The most common duration of therapy was 1-3 days (81%).
