Abstract
Background : Globally, 11–21 million cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever occur annually, with 128,000–161,000 deaths. Typhoid fever is a severe systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, characterized by fever and abdominal pain, and fluoroquinolones are effective due to their excellent tissue penetration, intracellular activity, and high gallbladder concentrations.
Objective : To determine the pattern of fluoroquinolone use in typhoid fever patients at RSUD R.T. Notopuro Sidoarjo, including dosage regimen and duration of therapy.
Method : This research used a descriptive observasional design with a retrospective approach. Data were collected from the medical records of 11 typhoid fever patients who received fluoroquinolone therapy during the period January 2023 to December 2024.
Result and Conclusion : Fluoroquinolones were administered as monotherapy in 12 patients (63%), two-drug combination therapy in 2 patients (11%), and as switch therapy in 5 patients (26%). The most frequently monotherapy regimen was levofloxacin (1x500 mg) iv in 5 patients. A pattern of two-drug combination therapy was identified, both consisting of cephalosporin + fluoroquinolone in 2 patients. There were 5 switch therapy patterns. The most common duration of fluoroquinolone therapy was 1–3 days (91%).
