Abstract
Background: Frozen shoulder is a pathological condition of the shoulder joint that causes pain and limited movement, commonly occurring in people aged 40-65 years with a higher prevalence in women. Electrotherapy and Codman’s exercise are physiotherapy modalities that can be used in the management of frozen shoulder.
Purpose: To determine the comparative effects of electrotherapy and electrotherapy combined with Codman’s exercise on pain reduction in cases of frozen shoulder.
Method: A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest two-group design involving 16 frozen shoulder patients at Brawijaya University Hospital, divided into two groups. Group 1 received electrotherapy (TENS and Ultrasound), while group 2 received electrotherapy combined with Codman's exercise. The intervention was conducted over 4 sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes. Pain was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Data analysis was performed using the Paired T-Test and Independent T-Test.
Result: Group 1 experienced a decrease in pain from 5.13 to 3.75 (p=0.000), while Group 2 experienced a decrease from 5.75 to 3.50 (p=0.000). The Independent T-Test showed no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.727).
Conclusion: Electrotherapy and electrotherapy with the addition of Codman’s exercise are both effective in reducing pain in frozen shoulder, but there is no statistically significant difference between the two. Both modalities can be used as intervention options in reducing pain in frozen shoulder patients.
