Abstract

Background: Adherence to home exercise programs is an important factor in the success of physiotherapy rehabilitation; however, adherence remains low in independent practice settings. This condition needs to be investigated because independent practice services require active patient involvement to achieve optimal recovery. One influencing factor is family support, which includes emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal aspects.
Method: This study employed a quantitative observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach involving 81 physiotherapy patients in the Lowokwaru District. Data were collected using the FSS and EARS questionnaires, both of which have been tested for validity and reliability, and were analyzed using the Spearman’s rho test.
Result: Through Spearman’s rho statistical analysis, a positive relationship was observed between family support and patients’ adherence to performing home exercises (p = 0.043), indicating that family support is correlated with adherence to home-based exercise programs.
Conclusion: Family involvement is one of the key components in the success of home exercise programs for physiotherapy patients. Adequate family support can help patients maintain motivation, discipline, and consistency in performing exercises, thereby having a positive impact on the recovery process and functional improvement.
