Abstract

Background: Older adults experience physiological changes such as excess weight and decreased dynamic balance, which are interrelated and together affect cardiovascular endurance. Excess weight increases the load on muscles, joints, and the heart, thereby reducing movement efficiency and oxygen utilization. Meanwhile, balance disorders cause the body to require more energy and postural control when moving, which ultimately also reduces cardiovascular endurance.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance levels with cardiovascular endurance in the elderly.
Method: This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach on 22 elderly respondents (>60 years) who were overweight and obese. Excess weight was measured using BMI, waist circumference, arm circumference, and fat thickness. Dynamic balance was assessed using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), while cardiovascular endurance was measured using the Two-Minute Walk Test (2-MWT). Data analysis used correlation and multiple linear regression tests to examine the simultaneous relationship between variables.
Result: This study shows that there is no significant relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance (p=0.083), nor is there a significant relationship between excess weight and cardiovascular endurance (p=0.327). However, dynamic balance has a significant relationship with cardiovascular endurance (p=0.000). Simultaneously, both variables significantly affect cardiovascular endurance (p=0.000) with a contribution of 78%.
Conclusion: There is a relationship between excess weight and dynamic balance levels with cardiovascular endurance in the elderly.
