Abstract

Background: Physiotherapists are health workers who have high physical work demands, such as performing manual therapy, moving patients, and maintaining certain work postures for a long time. This condition has the potential to increase the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) which can have an impact on work discomfort and decreased productivity. The high exposure to ergonomic risks in physiotherapists, especially in independent practice, makes MSDs an occupational health problem that needs serious attention.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between the risk level of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) and work discomfort in physiotherapists in independent practice in Malang City.
Methods: The research method used was observational analysis with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample amounted to 32 physiotherapists who were selected using purposive sampling techniques. The risk measurement of MSDs was carried out using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, while the level of work discomfort was measured using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ). Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate using the Fisher Exact test.
Study Results: The results showed that most of the respondents were in the moderate (93.75%) and moderate (93.75%) risk categories of MSDs (93.75%). The results of the Fisher Exact test showed a p value of < 0.05 (p < 0.001), which indicates a significant relationship between the risk level of MSDs and work discomfort in physiotherapists in independent practice in Malang City.
Conclusions: The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) and work discomfort in physiotherapists. The application of ergonomics principles and the prevention of MSDs from an early age is very necessary to maintain the occupational health of physiotherapists and maintain the quality of service.
