Abstract

Final year students are vulnerable to academic pressure and changes in roles and responsibilities as they emerging adulthood, which can trigger a quarter-life crisis and impact their psychological well-being. Problem-focused coping is important to examine as an adaptive strategy to help students cope with the demands of writing a thesis. This study aims to explore the role of quarter-life crisis and problem-focused coping on the psychological well-being of final year students writing their thesis. The study used a quantitative approach with a non-probability accidental sampling method, involving 348 respondents. Data analysis used multiple linear regression with a bootstrap approach. Measurement instruments included the Quarter Life Crisis Scale, the COPE Scales sub-dimension of Problem-Focused Coping, and Ryff's Psychological Well-Being (RPWB). The results show the simultaneous influence of quarter-life crisis and problem-focused coping on psychological well-being (R²=0.305), with quarter-life crisis having a significant positive effect on psychological well-being (B=0.855; p=0.000), while problem-focused coping has no significant effect on psychological well-being (B= -0.117; p=0.421), except in the dimensions of autonomy (B=0.089; p=0.013) and purpose in life (B= -0.089; p=0.003).
