Abstract

The increasing use of AI among Indonesian students has become a significant issue, providing significant benefits in supporting academic activities, but also raising concerns regarding ethics and risks. This study also found inconsistent findings from previous studies regarding the role of subjective norms as a determinant of students' intention to use AI. This study aims to determine the influence of subjective norms on the intention to use AI among Indonesian students through a quantitative correlational approach. Participants were 430 students from various universities in Indonesia selected through a convenience sampling technique. The research instruments were the Subjective Norms Scale to measure subjective norms and the Behavioral Intention to Use AI Scale to measure the intention to use AI. The regression test results showed that subjective norms had a positive and significant effect on the intention to use AI, with a standardized regression coefficient of 0.604 and an R² of 0.365 (p < 0.001). The higher the subjective norms perceived by students, the higher the students' intention to use AI in academic activities. This study strengthens the Theory of Planned Behavior framework, which places subjective norms as an important predictor of the intention to use AI. In addition, these findings can serve as a basis for formulating integrated and clear policies for educational institutions to regulate the responsible use of AI.
