Abstract
Background: Early marriage is a significant health and rights issue for adolescents in Indonesia.
Adolescents who enter early marriage face various psychological challenges that can impact their
mental health and quality of life. Low levels of mental health knowledge can affect adolescents'
ability to recognize and address mental health issues, ultimately impacting their quality of life.
However, no research has addressed this variable, specifically in Indonesia. Therefore, researchers
are interested in conducting research on the relationship between mental health knowledge and
quality of life among adolescents who enter early marriage in Bondowoso.
Research Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with purposive sampling technique
on 98 adolescents who engaged in early marriage in Wringin District, Bondowoso Regency. Data
were collected using the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) questionnaire to measure mental
health knowledge (19 items) and WHOQOL-BREF to measure quality of life (26 items). Data
analysis included univariate analysis to describe frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using
Spearman Rank correlation test.
Results: The results showed that the average mental health literacy score was 54.40 (SD=10.61)
from a score range of 19-90, and the average quality of life score was 85.82 (SD=13.51) from a
score range of 26-130. The Pearson test results showed a significant positive relationship between
mental health literacy and quality of life (r=0.509, p<0.01), indicating that higher mental health
literacy is associated with better quality of life among adolescents who engaged in early marriage.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between mental health literacy and quality of life
among adolescents who engaged in early marriage in Bondowoso. Improving mental health literacy
can be an effective strategy to enhance the quality of life of adolescents who engage in early
marriage.
