Abstract
Academic procrastination is a common issue experienced by university students and can negatively impact academic achievement. This study aims to analyze the effect of self handicapping on academic procrastination and to examine whether social support moderates this relationship. The research employed a quantitative approach with a moderation research design with a total of 240 dental students selected using convenience sampling. The instruments used in this study included the Academic Procrastination Scale (APS), the Self handicapping Scale (SHS), and a Social Support Scale. Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple linear regression and Hayes’ PROCESS Macro. The results indicate that self handicapping has a positive and significant effect on academic procrastination (β = 0.288; t = 4.700; p < 0.001), suggesting that higher levels of self handicapping
are associated with greater tendencies toward procrastination. However, social support was not found to moderate this relationship, as indicated by a nonsignificant interaction effect (β = 0.010; t = 0.154; p = 0.878). These findings suggest that self handicapping is a contributing factor in the emergence of academic procrastination among students, while social support does not alter the strength of this effect.
