Abstract

Twenty-first century education requires prospective teachers to possess strong digital literacy and collaboration skills as essential competencies in technology-integrated learning. However, learning practices in higher education are still largely dominated by conventional approaches that have not optimally developed these competencies. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Deep Learning approach on digital literacy and collaboration skills of prospective Biology teachers, as well as to describe students’ perceptions of Deep Learning-based instruction. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The research participants consisted of 48 students of the Biology Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Pontianak, divided into an experimental group (25 students) and a control group (23 students). Research instruments included digital literacy and collaboration questionnaires, an observation sheet of Deep Learning implementation, and a student perception questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Independent Samples t-test and Paired Samples t-test after meeting the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. The results showed that there was a significant effect of the Deep Learning approach on students’ digital literacy and collaboration skills, as indicated by significant differences in posttest scores between the experimental and control groups with a significance value of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the paired test results indicated a significant improvement in digital literacy and collaboration skills in the experimental group between the pretest and posttest with a significance value of Sig. = 0.000. Students’ perceptions of Deep Learning-based instruction were categorized as positive, particularly in supporting conceptual understanding, active engagement, meaningful use of digital technology, and group collaboration. Therefore, the Deep Learning approach is effective and feasible for enhancing digital literacy and collaboration skills of prospective Biology teachers in higher education.
