Abstract
Background : Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease that requires regular hemodialysis therapy. Patient compliance in undergoing hemodialysis is very important to prevent complications and improve quality of life. Patient compliance can be influenced by various factors, one of which is family support. Objective : This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and hemodialysis compliance in chronic kidney failure patients. Methods : This study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach in 139 hemodialysis patients in the Dialysis Room of Wava Husada Hospital, Kepanjen. Data collection was conducted using the Perceived Social Support–Family (PSS-Fa) questionnaire to measure family support and the End Stage Renal Disease–Adherence Questionnaire (ESRD-AQ) to measure hemodialysis adherence, with data analysis using the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results : The results showed that most respondents had good family support (95%) and were compliant with hemodialysis (96.4%). Spearman's correlation test showed a significant relationship between family support and hemodialysis compliance (p = 0.001; r = 0.486) with moderate strength and positive direction. Conclusion : Good family support has a positive relationship with the level of hemodialysis compliance in chronic kidney failure patients, which means that the better the family support, the higher the patient's compliance. Family support plays a crucial role in providing motivation, supervision, and emotional and instrumental support to patients. Therefore, active and ongoing family involvement is necessary to improve hemodialysis adherence and prevent complications.
