Abstract

Wife’s desire to pursue further education to improve their competence at work isn’t the decision they can decide alone. Their responsibilities and roles in their household as a wife and a mother become obstacles to her studies. Therefore, negotiation of husband and wife is essentials for the decision making. This research examine how couples done their decision making through the prisoner’s dilemma theory perspective. Using a qualitative case study approach, data gathered through interviews and documentation. Subjects were selected thriugh purposive sampling. Results shown that couples work together to achieve a win-win solution which benefit both sides. Couples rely on each other to fulfill their household roles and financial needs. High levels of trust and openness are necessary throughout the negotiation process to prevent long term conflict. Messages shared through the negotiation process needs to be prepared to avoid misunderstanding. Nonverbal communication helps them to understand each other’s purpose better. Face-to-face communication works better as it shown the verbal and nonverbal cues with fewer noise and distraction.
