Abstract
The study entitled "THE LATENT MEANING OF SIGNS OF WORLD PEACE ISSUES IN FILM (Semiotic Analysis in Christopher Nolan's Film Oppenheimer 2023 by Christopher Nolan)” examines how the hidden meaning of world peace issues is represented through visual and narrative signs in the film Oppenheimer (2023). This film was chosen because it presents the moral dilemma of scientists, political tensions between countries, and cinematic symbols that depict the paradox of nuclear power in the discourse of global peace. The purpose of this study is to reveal the latent meanings behind the film's visual and narrative structures, particularly regarding the moral responsibility of scientists, state control over the narrative of peace, and the myth of peace based on threat. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, which includes three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that the film Oppenheimer constructs the meaning of peace through two major plots, namely the subjective plot (Fission), which depicts Oppenheimer's inner conflict as a scientist, and the objective plot (Fusion), which represents the state's interest in monopolizing the definition of security and peace. This latent meaning is conveyed through symbols such as the visual explosion of Trinity, contemplative dialogue with Einstein, and scenes depicting trauma and concerns about global destruction. The findings confirm that peace in this film is constructed not as harmony, but as the result of negotiations between individual ethics, political power, and the threat of nuclear destruction as a myth of world stability.
