Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is an important factor in maintaining hormonal balance and female reproductive health. Poor sleep quality can affect the regulation of melatonin, estrogen, and progesterone
hormones, which play a role in regulating the menstrual cycle. Nursing students face high academic demands, placing them at risk for sleep disturbances that may impact menstrual cycle regularity.
Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 134 nursing students selected using purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria included active nursing students, being of reproductive age, and willingness to participate as respondents. Sleep quality was measured using the
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while menstrual cycle regularity was assessed using a menstrual cycle questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test at a significance level of α = 0.05.
Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents had poor sleep quality (67.9%), while 32.1% had good sleep quality. Regarding menstrual cycle regularity, 70.1% of respondents had normal menstrual cycles, and 29.9% had irregular cycles. The Chi-Square test yielded a p-value of 0.458 (p > 0.05), indicating no statistically significant relationship between sleep quality and menstrual cycle regularity.
Conclusion: This study found no significant relationship between sleep quality and menstrual cycle regularity among nursing students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Although poor sleep quality was
more prevalent among respondents, most nursing students still experienced normal menstrual cycles. These findings indicate that sleep quality is not a determining factor in menstrual cycle regularity in this study population; however, it remains important as part of efforts to maintain overall health.
