Abstract

This study aims to determine how interpersonal communication is established between students from East Lombok studying in Malang with their parents, and to identify communication barriers that arise during the process. Students' move to a new environment causes significant changes in emotional and social aspects, so communication with parents becomes an important factor in maintaining psychological well-being and emotional closeness. This study uses a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of students living in the East Lombok Malang Dormitory and based on field data totaling 8 students. Overall, this study concludes that interpersonal communication between students from East Lombok and their parents is not just an exchange of messages, but a meaningful interaction process that strengthens emotional bonds, forms independence, and helps students adapt to life away from home.
