Abstract

The journalistic product in question is created through a skill or art called journalism, with the aim of influencing the audience(communicants) in accordance with the communicator's wishes. This event took place between August until September 2025, and refers to the increase in allowances for members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2024-2029 period. This study analyzes news discourse related to the increase in the Indonesian House of Representatives allowances in 2025 amid economic issues reported in the online media Suara.com.
This study uses a qualitative approach with Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis method, which covers three dimensions: text structure, reader social cognition, and social context. Data were obtained from news articles related to DPR allowances, which were analyzed based on language patterns, lexical choices, sentence structure, rhetorical strategies, and readers' mental models of political and economic issues. The results show that news text highlight structural inequality, in which the legislative elite enjoy large allowances while the public faces economic pressure. Social cognition analysis reveals that readers interpret this issue through the framework of power inequality, triggering feelings of disappointment, anger, and distrust. The social context shows that the DPR's decisions conflict with public priorities, such as education budget cuts, thereby reinforcing public distrust of the legislative body. This study confirms the role of online media in shaping public opinion and highlights socio-economic inequality, moral legitimacy, and the failure of political representation.
