Abstract
Background : Adolescence is a crucial developmental stage characterized by complex biological, psychological, and social changes. During this period, adolescents often face various pressures such as academic demands, social interactions, and the search for self-identity. These conditions may lead to prolonged stress that can potentially develop into depression if not accompanied by adequate coping abilities and environmental support. Depression in adolescents requires serious attention because it can negatively affect academic achievement, social relationships, and even increase the risk of maladaptive behaviors and suicide.
Methods : This study employed a cross-sectional design and utilized a random sampling technique with a population of 124 students. The independent variable in this study was social support, while the dependent variable was the level of depression. Both variables were measured using three questionnaire instruments: the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test.
Results : The analysis showed that the correlation between social support (MSPSS) and depression levels yielded a p-value of 0.708 with an r-value of 0.034, while the correlation between social support (MOS) and depression levels produced a p-value of 0.808 with an r-value of 0.022. These results indicate that there was no significant relationship between social support and depression levels (p > 0.05). The very low correlation coefficients suggest a weak positive direction of association that was not statistically significant.
Conclusion : Based on the researchers, they concluded that there is a relationship between sociodemographic factors and smartphone addiction in teenagers.
