Abstract
This research was motivated by the researcher's interest in the phenomenon of interpersonal conflict management between siblings and in-laws living together. Based on observations, the researcher found mild to severe conflict within the sibling-in-law relationship. The purpose of this study was to understand how conflict is managed in interpersonal communication between siblings living together.
This study utilized the conflict management strategies proposed by Hendyat Sutopo, namely collaboration, compromise, avoidance, adjustment, and negotiation. Furthermore, the researcher utilized a supporting theory, namely the relational dialectic theory by Leslie Baxter and Barbara Montgomery, which describes a relationship characterized by tension and contradiction.
This study employed a qualitative approach, employing a case study method to obtain in-depth and detailed information.
The results showed that conflict between siblings living together arose from differing opinions regarding a particular issue that occurred in each pair of informants. In conflict management strategies, all parties engaged in avoidance by avoiding topics that triggered conflict while living together. Furthermore, an open attitude was applied in collaboration strategies, and in compromising strategies, in-laws acted as conflict communicators. After that, in an effort to reach an agreement on a solution, a third party was used as a neutral party in the negotiation phase. This had negative impacts, including discomfort while living together, and obstacles such as emotional instability and difficulty finding a suitable time to manage the conflict.
