Abstract
This study aims to determine the interpersonal communication strategies of boarding house residents in resolving conflicts in the boarding house environment. Conflict is an unavoidable part of communal life, including in a boarding house environment that is accepted by individuals with different backgrounds, to different habits, thus affecting the comfort and harmony between boarding house residents and triggering conflict. The study was conducted in Malang City, using a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research subjects were active students domiciled in Malang City, who had experienced conflict in the boarding house environment. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. This study uses the Relational Dialectic Theory developed by Leslie, Baxter, and Rawlins which includes openness and protection, autonomy and connection. The results of the study show that interpersonal communication strategies do not occur instantly, but rather through stages involving the role of the communicator in conveying messages clearly and still using more subtle language as support so that the message is conveyed can be received. In the message delivery strategy, it is also done to the point and there is an announcement of the message to emphasize the intent and ensure awareness of the individuals involved. The use of digital media WhatsApp can facilitate the delivery of information and coordination between boarding house residents. Digital media is used wisely so as not to cause misunderstandings that can trigger conflict.
