Abstract
This study aims to describe the interpersonal communication process of divorced parents in shaping positive behavior in children. This study is motivated by the fact that parental divorce is an event that has a major impact on the emotional, social, and psychological development of children. Parents have an important role in interpersonal communication with children to help children adjust and shape positive behavior. This study was conducted in Batu City using a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews with divorced parents who are fathers or mothers who remain actively involved in communication with their children, and have children aged 15 years and above who can provide responses. This study uses the interpersonal communication theory by Joseph A. DeVito which includes several stages, namely the sending of messages is carried out by the communicator to the communicant using certain media to obtain a response from the communicant. The results of the study show that effective interpersonal communication between parents and children after divorce is characterized by openness, empathy, emotional support, and consistency in delivering messages. Communication carried out with the cooperation of parents in providing consistent messages can create a sense of security that encourages the formation of positive behavior in children such as increasing self-confidence, responsibility, independence, and discipline.
