Abstract

This study aims to compare the principles of teachers’ and students’ adab (ethical
conduct) in educational interaction from the perspectives of classical Islamic education,
represented by Imam Nawawi’s Adab al-‘Ālim wa al-Muta‘allim, and contemporary
pedagogy, represented by Winarno Surachmad’s Pengantar Interaksi Mengajar-
Belajar, with a focus on strengthening ethics and moral character as the foundation of
character-based learning. Using a qualitative approach with a library content analysis
method, this research reveals substantive points of convergence between the two
perspectives despite their different epistemological frameworks. Imam Nawawi
emphasizes that educational interaction must be grounded in purity of intention, the
moral–spiritual exemplarity of teachers, and students’ attitudes of respect (ta‘ẓīm)
toward knowledge and educators, positioning education as a process of moral
formation and spiritual refinement. Meanwhile, Winarno Surachmad highlights the
importance of humanistic, communicative, and professional educational relationships,
viewing teachers as facilitators of learning and students as active subjects who possess
potential, needs, and responsibility for their own learning. These findings indicate that
although differing in terminology and historical context, both perspectives regard
teacher–student interaction as an ethical, value-laden relationship rather than merely a
technical-instructional process. Therefore, this study concludes that ideal educational
interaction, relevant to contemporary educational challenges, requires the integration
of spirituality-based adab with professional and humanistic pedagogical approaches in
order to realize holistic, meaningful, and character-based educatio
