Abstract

The act of naming by parents serves not only as an identity marker but also as a symbolic medium for hopes, aspirations, and prayers that accompany a child’s life from birth. This study aims to describe the signifiers in the naming of students at Islamic Boarding Schools (IBS) in Malang Regency, analyze the signifieds in the naming practices, and identify the social and cultural values embedded in those names. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with documentation techniques, while data analysis is carried out using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach. The findings reveal that the signifiers of students’ names are highly diverse, encompassing Arabic, Indonesian, and other foreign languages, indicating religious, local, and global influences. Most names consist of two to three words with syntagmatic variations in the form of nouns, adjectives, numerals, patronymics, and titles. The signifieds within the names include categories such as religious, descriptive, ethnolinguistic, aristocratic, and modern names. The social and cultural values reflected in the names include Islamic, local, patronymic, and global values. These findings demonstrate that names, as linguistic symbols, also function as socio-cultural practices that reinforce religious values, local traditions, kinship ties, as well as modern and global aspirations within the identity of pesantren students.
