Abstract
Background: Scabies is a contagious skin disease that is still commonly found in
Islamic boarding schools, mainly due to poor personal hygiene and crowded living
conditions with limited sanitation facilities. Transmission can occur through direct or
indirect contact with an infected person, including shared clothing, towels, or bedding.
Madrasah Ibtidaiyah students are considered a vulnerable group because their
knowledge and habits of maintaining personal hygiene are still low. This study aims to
determine the relationship between personal hygiene and environmental factors with
the incidence of scabies among MI students in Islamic boarding schools.
Methods: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional
approach. A sample of 88 students in East Java was selected using total sampling. The
research instruments consisted of questionnaires and observation sheets, while data
analysis used the Chi-Square test and logistic regression.
Results: There was a significant relationship between skin and hand hygiene
(p=0.026), clothing hygiene (p=0.031), and towel hygiene (p=0.036) with the incidence
of scabies. The majority of Environmental factors were classified as good and did not
show sufficient variation to perform statistical tests.
Conclusion: Personal hygiene plays an important role in preventing scabies among
Islamic boarding school students, especially skin, clothing, and towel hygiene.
Improved personal hygiene education and routine monitoring in the boarding school
Environment are needed to reduce the risk of scabies transmission.
Keywords: scabies, personal hygiene, Environmental factors, Islamic boarding school
