Abstract

Mathematics learning in elementary schools still faces challenges in the form of low student engagement and limited mathematical skills due to the dominance of conventional teacher-centered instructional methods. This condition results in students’ difficulties in understanding abstract concepts, particularly quadrilateral plane figures. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a YouTube-assisted Game-Based Learning model that is valid, practical, and effective in improving student engagement and mathematical skills at the elementary school level. The study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research subjects were 18 third-grade students at MI Muhammadiyah 03 Wedung, Lamongan Regency. The developed learning model integrates YouTube instructional videos as conceptual priming to support initial conceptual understanding and non-digital educational games using tangram as tools for exploration and concept application. Model validity was examined through expert validation, while practicality and effectiveness were measured using a one-group pretest–posttest design, student engagement observations, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the learning model achieved a validity score of 84%, categorized as highly valid. Effectiveness testing indicated an improvement in students’ mathematical skills with an N-gain score of 0.53, classified as moderate. Furthermore, student engagement reached 86%, categorized as very high across cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects. Therefore, the YouTube-assisted Game-Based Learning model is feasible as an innovative alternative for elementary mathematics instruction.
