Abstract
The phenomenon of fan engagement in K-pop fandoms has become an increasingly prominent social and psychological dynamic, particularly among late adolescents and young adults. Such engagement is not only related to entertainment consumption but may also function as a social context associated with the fulfillment of individuals’ basic psychological needs. This study aims to describe the level of self-determination among Indonesian fans of Seventeen (Carat) based on self-determination theory. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the study involved 242 Seventeen fans aged 15–35 years. Data were collected using the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, which measures three basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—across the dimensions of need satisfaction and need frustration. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by examining minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation values. The results indicate that, overall, the mean scores of need satisfaction across all three aspects are higher than those of need frustration, although a moderate level of frustration was found in the autonomy aspect. These findings provide an overview that engagement in the Seventeen fandom is associated with experiences of basic psychological need fulfillment, while variations in experiences of need frustration remain present in certain contexts.
