Abstract

Mathematics learning in the 21st century emphasizes the importance of conceptual understanding as a foundation for students to connect mathematical ideas with various mathematical and real-life contexts. However, classroom observations in tenth-grade mathematics indicate that students’ conceptual understanding remains limited, particularly in restating concepts, classifying objects based on their properties, and applying algorithms in problem solving. One contributing factor is the use of learning models and media that do not optimally support active student engagement and the visualization of abstract concepts. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model assisted by GeoGebra in enhancing students’ mathematical conceptual understanding. A mixed methods approach was employed, involving 22 tenth-grade students of class X-A at SMA Muhammadiyah Manado. Data were collected through mathematical conceptual understanding tests (pretest and posttest), classroom observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using the N-Gain formula, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively to support the quantitative findings. The results indicate that the implementation of TGT assisted by GeoGebra was carried out very effectively, as reflected by a 100% achievement in learning activity observations. The average students’ conceptual understanding score increased from 50.45 in the pretest to 80.82 in the posttest, with an N-Gain value of 0.581, which falls into the moderate category. In addition, students’ responses toward the learning process were categorized as effective, with an average percentage of 83%. In conclusion, the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model assisted by GeoGebra is effective in improving students’ mathematical conceptual understanding and promotes an active, collaborative, and meaningful learning environment
