Abstract
This research is motivated by the dynamics of student motivation and character-building efforts, which are critical areas in the development of vocational education, particularly within the Muhammadiyah school environment. This study aims to analyze student motivation in participating in the Tapak Suci extracurricular activity and its role as a medium for forming Muhammadiyah character among students at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Malang. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected from 10 students and 2 instructors through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that student motivation for joining the extracurricular activity varies, involving an interaction between intrinsic factors (achievement, skills, self-development) and extrinsic factors (awards, social support). The implications of this study show that Tapak Suci significantly shapes Muhammadiyah character through explicit value instruction (discipline, firmness, politeness) and critical moments such as Malam Bina Iman (Mabit), which internalizes values through experiential learning. Furthermore, the program fosters multi-faceted independence and encourages social contribution through collaboration. The firm yet rational role of instructors, coupled with school support, serves as a key success factor. Theoretically, this research enriches Self-Determination Theory (SDT) regarding the transition from external regulation to autonomous motivation. Practically, it is recommended that extracurricular programs integrate incentives, optimize experiential moments, apply rational pedagogy, and develop systematic character measurement.
