Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ number sense abilities in solving numeracy problems. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with Madrasah Ibtidaiyah students as the subjects. Data were collected through numeracy tests and questionnaires to examine students’ abilities based on three number sense indicators: understanding and using numbers, knowledge and skills in performing mathematical operations, and the application of operational knowledge in numeracy calculation contexts. The results indicate that students’ number sense abilities have not yet developed optimally and generally fall into the moderate category, although some students demonstrate high and low levels of ability. Students tend to master basic calculations procedurally; however, they do not consistently show flexibility in mathematical thinking, reasonableness judgment of results, or a contextual understanding of numbers in numeracy situations. Based on the number sense indicators proposed by McIntosh and Reys, the limitations of students’ number sense abilities are influenced by cognitive and affective aspects, learning experiences, and a high dependence on examples and teacher guidance in problem solving.
