Urgensi Program Boarding School dalam Mengembangkan Karakter Religius dan Intelektual Siswa Studi Kasus di SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sidoarjo

This study discusses the urgency of boarding school programs in developing students' religious and intellectual character, aiming to describe and explain the school's goals, vision, and mission in educating students' religious character and morals through boarding school programs and regular school specialization classes. This study uses a qualitative and case study-based research approach, with data collection techniques in the form of interviews and unstructured observations as well as documentation. The results show that the formation of religious and intellectual character is the main objective of the school, prioritizing character building through habitual activities, memorization and tahsin of the Qur'an, as well as strengthening Arabic language skills through comprehensive boarding school learning. Of course, the program is not without challenges; the challenge of digitalization is the main challenge in terms of shaping students' religious and intellectual character. Thomas Lickona's character education theory was used to observe and explain the activities in the boarding school, while cognitive, affective, and psychomotor education theories were used to describe intellectual education in schools and how to overcome challenges in character building. As a result, it is hoped that the boarding school will become a new and progressive institution under the auspices of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sidoarjo, always improving and responding to the challenges of today and tomorrow.
