Abstract

Breast cancer (Ca Mammae) is the type of cancer with the highest prevalence among women in Indonesia. Chemotherapy, as a primary treatment method, often causes side effects such as nausea and vomiting (ChemotherapyInduced Nausea and Vomiting), experienced by approximately 96% of patients. Peppermint aromatherapy contains menthol, which has antiemetic and antispasmodic properties, making it a potential non-pharmacological therapy to reduce these symptoms. To determine the effectiveness of peppermint aromatherapy intervention in reducing nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RSUD Dr. Saiful Anwar, Malang. This study used a case study design on a patient (Mrs. S, 31 years old) diagnosed with Ca Mammae. The intervention involved peppermint aromatherapy administered via a diffuser (3-4 drops in 30-40 ml of water) for 15 minutes, 3 times daily for 3 consecutive days. Nausea levels were measured using the Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (INVR) questionnaire and the Indonesian Nursing Outcome Standards (SLKI). After 3 days of intervention, there was a significant decrease in the INVR score, from a score of 17 (severe category) on the first day to 8 (mild category) on the third day. The indicator for the feeling of wanting to vomit (SLKI) also showed improvement, from scale 1 (increased) to scale 4 (sufficiently decreased). The administration of peppermint aromatherapy is effective in reducing the intensity of nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients post-chemotherapy. This therapy can be recommended as an adjunct to pharmacological therapy in complementary nursing care.
