Abstract
This study aims to analyze the coverage of Indonesian online media regarding Iran’s retaliatory attack against Israel on 14 April 2024. This issue holds significant geopolitical importance and is often framed differently by the media in accordance with their respective editorial orientations. The theoretical framework of this research includes media constructivism, agenda-setting theory, and the framing theory of Pan and Kosicki, which emphasizes four elements of analysis: syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a documentation technique, involving the collection of news texts from Republika.co.id and Kompas.com as primary data sources. The data are analyzed through the identification of framing structures to examine how each media outlet constructs the reality of the news.
The findings indicate that Republika.co.id tends to highlight the legitimacy of Iran’s actions as a form of retaliation against Israeli aggression and uses more emotionally charged diction. In contrast, Kompas.com presents coverage that is more neutral and informative, emphasizing caution, regional stability, and perspectives of international law. These differences demonstrate that news construction is influenced by ideology, editorial values, and the target audience orientation of each media outlet.
This study concludes that the same event can be framed differently by the media, resulting in diverse public perceptions.
