Abstract

Self-compassion is one of the abilities that plays an important role in adolescent development. This ability can help adolescents avoid negative thoughts and develop the ability to find solutions to the problems they face. This study aims to investigate how parenting styles are related to self-compassion in adolescents. The study was conducted using a quantitative correlational design. The subjects were selected using simple random sampling, involving a total of 259 students. The parenting style variable was measured using the Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire-Short Version (PSDQ). Meanwhile, the self-compassion variable was measured using the Self Compassion Scale (SCS). The results of the hypothesis test using Spearman Rank found that authoritative parenting had a significant positive relationship with self-compassion. Meanwhile, authoritarian and permissive parenting were found to have a significant negative relationship. Therefore, it is important for parents to apply a balanced parenting style that combines love, structure, and clear boundaries, as this plays a role in supporting the development of healthy self-compassion in adolescents. For students, they can develop self-compassion by seeking supportive environments or figures, such as teachers, counselors, or peers who are responsive and supportive.
