Abstract

Nurses are the frontline of hospital services. The increasing number of private hospitals in both rural and urban areas necessitates competitiveness. Nurses with high resilience are able to overcome work challenges, both from patients and the ever-changing external demands of the hospital. Nurses with high emotional intelligence are able to understand their own emotions and those of others and are able to use these emotions to manage work challenges effectively, thereby winning the competition. This study aims to determine the effect of emotional intelligence on nurse resilience. This study uses a quantitative correlational approach. The subjects of this study were 194 nurses from Hospital X, selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the resilience scale (The 14-item resilience scale (RS-14)) and the emotional intelligence scale (Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS)). The data analysis method used in this study was simple linear regression analysis. The results of the analysis indicate that emotional intelligence influences nurse resilience at Hospital X. The contribution of emotional intelligence to resilience is 73.1%. The dimension of using emotions to facilitate work has the greatest contribution to resilience, followed by the dimensions of self-assessment and expression of emotions, self-regulation of emotions, and assessment and recognition of other people's emotions.
