Abstract

The increasing intensity of online gambling among college students has become a serious concern due to the ease of access to digital platforms and high exposure to online gambling promotions. One psychological factor often associated with risky behaviors such as gambling is sensation seeking, which is an individual's tendency to seek new and exciting experiences and a willingness to take risks to achieve these experiences. This study aims to determine the effect of sensation seeking on the intensity of online gambling among college students. The research method used a quantitative approach with a correlational design, involving 385 college students in Malang City selected through incidental sampling. The instruments used were the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale–Indonesian (BSSS-I) and the Online Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (O-GSAS). Simple linear regression analysis showed no significant effect between sensation seeking and online gambling intensity (p > 0.05) with an R² value of 0.002. This means that sensation seeking only explains 0.2% of the variation in online gambling intensity. This finding indicates that college students' involvement in online gambling is more influenced by social, environmental, or other psychological factors.
