Abstract

The teacher and student relationship plays a role in developing children's social-emotional competence. The absence of parents makes teachers a substitute attachment figure for children at school. Children with good social-emotional competence will be able to recognize and understand their strengths and weaknesses, be able to manage emotions, understand and respond to the feelings of others, maintain healthy relationships, and be able to make responsible decisions. The purpose of this study was to determine the social-emotional development of children with parental absence, where the increasing number of absent parents, mainly due to immigration and divorce. The study used a non-experimental quantitative approach. The subjects were 200 students in grades 4-6 who were in a parental absence condition. The data collection technique used was cluster sampling. The scales used in the study were the Student Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) and the Social-Emotional Competence Questionnaire (SEQC). The data analysis method was Spearman correlation. The results of the study showed that the teacher and student relationship had a weak relationship with the development of social-emotional competence of children with parental absence (sig. 0.944)
