Abstract

Background: Liver cirrhosis is a chronic disease characterized by hepatic inflammation and the formation of regenerative nodules accompanied by dense fibrotic tissue. This condition may disrupt portal blood flow and hepatocyte perfusion and is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. One of the most frequent complications of cirrhosis is ascites, defined as the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The mainstay therapy for ascites is diuretic administration, which reduces fluid accumulation and improves the patient’s clinical condition.
Objective: This study aimed to identify the pattern of furosemide therapy, including dosage, route of administration, frequency, duration, combination therapy, and switching patterns.
Methods: This was an observational study with a retrospective design, using Medical record cirrhotic patients with ascites during the period from January 2023 to December 2024.
Results and Conclusion: The therapy profile showed that furosemide monotherapy was used in 8 patients (29%) and combination therapy in 19 patients (71%). The most common monotherapy was furosemide (1×40 mg) IV (25%), while the most frequent combination was furosemide (1×20 mg IV) with spironolactone (3×100 mg PO). in 2 patienst (10%) Switching patterns of furosemide were found in 6 patients (25%) out of a total of 24 patients, duration of furosemide use in patients with liver cirrhosis was 3– 7 days (67%).
