Abstract

The textile industry has evolved to the point where innovations in the production of synthetic textile dyes have increased the efficiency of textile production. However, this advancement has not been matched by adequate waste treatment processes. The chemical bonds in synthetic textile dyes are not easily degradable, which can lead to ecological damage and health issues for humans. This research discusses the adsorption of various types of adsorbents with high effectiveness and cost efficiency for treating wastewater containing textile dye residues, using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Data collection for this study utilized the international database Scopus with the following criteria: (i) articles published from 2019-2024, (ii) written in English, (iii) Open Access and Final Stage, and (iv) related to the research theme “environmental science.” A total of 15 articles were analyzed. The results indicate that the concentration of synthetic dyes in textile wastewater can be reduced using adsorption methods with activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is derived from waste materials, plants, and agricultural by products that are economically viable, making it accessible to various segments of the textile industry. The findings of this study are intended to be used as a learning resource for 10th-grade biology in the second semester, specifically for Competency Standard 3.11.
