Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Its management requires effective and safe antihypertensives. Methyldopa has long been used as first-line therapy. However, its use patterns, including dosage, combination, and effectiveness, need to be evaluated.
Objective: To determine patterns of methyldopa use in preeclampsia patients at Kanjuruhan Hospital, including dosage, combination therapy, switching patterns, length of treatment, and patient outcomes. This study used a descriptive observational design with a retrospective approach. Data were obtained from the medical records of patients from January 2023 to March 2025, with a sample size of 25 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Based on the results of research on the use of methyldopa in preeclampsia patients at Kanjuruhan Regional Hospital, several important findings were obtained. The pattern of methyldopa use as a single therapy was given to four patients, with details of two patients (50%) receiving a dose of (3x250 mg) orally and two other patients (50%) receiving a dose of (3x500 mg) orally. The most commonly used pattern was a combination of two drugs, namely methyldopa (3x500 mg) orally combined with nifedipine (3x10 mg) orally, which was given to 22 patients (60%). In addition, a pattern of switch therapy was also found in 10 patients (27%), indicating that therapy was adjusted based on the patient's clinical condition.
