Abstract
Background: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Diazepam, as one of the benzodiazepine drugs, is often used in emergency epilepsy conditions due to its rapid anticonvulsant effects.
Objective: To determine the pattern of diazepam, use in epilepsy patients at the Kanjuruhan Malang Regional General Hospital Inpatient Facility, including the type of preparation, dosage, route, interval, and duration of use.
Methods: This study used a retrospective observational design with a descriptive approach, based on patient medical records from January 2023 to February 2025. A total of 21 samples met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed descriptively using tables and percentages.
Results and Conclusions: The study showed that diazepam was not administered as monotherapy but in combination with two (35%), three (14%), and four drugs (5%), and there were 17 therapy switch patterns. The most used dose was a single 10 mg intravenous dose of diazepam (90%), with the most common duration of use being 1 day (90%). All patients showed improvement upon discharge from the hospital. The conclusion of this study is that diazepam plays an important role as acute therapy in epilepsy patients, but its use tends to be temporary and combined with other AEDs. Further prospective studies are recommended to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and long-term impact of this combination therapy.
