Abstract
This study aims to analyze the framing of news coverage regarding the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria by two international media outlets, Al Jazeera and CNN News. Using a constructivist paradigm and a descriptive qualitative method, the research applies Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which includes four dimensions: defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and suggesting treatments. The research object consists of eight news articles four from Al Jazeera and four from CNN News published between December 8 and December 12, 2024. The results show that Al Jazeera’s framing emphasizes the suffering of the people, the legitimacy of the opposition’s struggle, and the hope for a democratic transition in Syria. Meanwhile, CNN News highlights Assad’s authoritarianism, the regime’s systematic violence, and the need for international intervention and attention. These differences in framing reflect the ideological backgrounds of both media: Al Jazeera’s Middle Eastern, pro-people perspective, and CNN’s Western perspective emphasizing liberal values and human rights. This study affirms that media constructions of reality are not neutral but are influenced by ideology, interests, and audience orientation.
