Abstract

Background: Mental disorders are a health problem that continues to increase throughout the world, including in Indonesia. This disease not only affects the individual concerned, but also causes significant psychosocial stress on the family. In the treatment process, the family has an important role in supporting the patient's recovery. Objective: This study aims to explore family experiences in caring for family members with mental disorders, as well as identify challenges and efforts made to support patient recovery. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method with three main participants, namely parents and siblings of patients in Jatiguwi Village, Malang Regency. Data were analyzed using triangulation methods to ensure the validity of the information. Results The results showed that families experienced a variety of initial emotional responses, such as sadness, confusion, and shame. Initial treatment efforts involved alternative approaches before resorting to medical treatment. In addition, family support included emotional, instrumental, and informational aspects. However, families also faced social stigma, financial burdens, and challenges in treating patients. Conclusion: The role of the family is very important in the process of treating patients with mental disorders. Emotional and instrumental support from the family, although overshadowed by social stigma and financial limitations, is a major factor in the success of treatment.
