Abstract

Academic procrastination remains a classic problem among high school students, marked by a strong tendency to delay assignments and studying, which affects their academic performance. One factor suspected of worsening this condition is the lack of father involvement in children’s lives (fatherless), either physically or psychologically. This study aims to examine the effect of fatherlessness on academic procrastination among high school students. Academic procrastination is a prevalent issue among adolescents, and the lack of paternal involvement (fatherlessness) is believed to exacerbate this tendency. A quantitative correlational method with convenience sampling was employed, involving 164 high school students aged 16–18 years. The instruments used were the father involvement scale (reverse-scored to assess fatherlessness) and the Pure Procrastination Scale (PPS). Data analysis using simple linear regression revealed a positive and significant relationship between fatherlessness and academic procrastination (β = 0.182; p = 0.020). Higher levels of fatherlessness were associated with increased procrastination tendencies. However, the coefficient of determination (R² = 0.033) indicated that fatherlessness accounted for only 3.3% of the variance in academic procrastination, with the remaining variance explained by other factors. These findings highlight the importance of paternal involvement—physically, emotionally, and psychologically—in supporting adolescents’ academic development and emphasize the need for guidance, counseling, and interventions aimed at enhancing self-regulation among fatherless students.
