Abstract
Self-regulation plays an important role in achieving academic success and psychological well-being of students. One factor that influences the self-regulation ability of students living away from home is the parenting style of parents before they leave home. The parenting style applied by parents plays a very important role in shaping the character, independence, and self-regulation ability of individuals. This study aims to understand the extent to which self-regulation of students living away from home is influenced by the background of the parenting they experienced before leaving home. This study is a quantitative non-experimental study with multiple linear regression analysis to analyze the effect of parenting styles on self-regulation in students living away from home. The number of research subjects was 141 active students who were living away from home, aged 18-25 years, male and female, obtained through convenience sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out by distributing online questionnaires. The measuring instruments used were the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) scale and the Self-Regulation Scale. The results showed a significant influence between father's parenting style (p < 0.001) and mother's parenting style (p < 0.001) on self-regulation of students living away from home. The authoritative parenting styles of fathers (β = 0.563) and mothers (β = 0.658) were shown to contribute the most to improving self-regulation.
