Abstract
This study analyzes the process of the back-articulation of the narrative “If we burn, you burn with us” from the film The Hunger Games in the context of pro-Palestinian digital protests. The study aims to capture the representation of discourse in mainstream media, which ultimately encourages pro-Palestinian activism to utilize digital space and popular culture as a means for them to effectively rearticulate protests. Using a qualitative approach with case study methods and qualitative content analysis, this study aims to examine how fictional narratives transform their meaning into real political discourse. The results show that the back-articulation of the narrative “If we burn, you burn with us” from an anti-tyranny message (according to Hall's encoding) can be transformed into a pro-Palestinian political discourse that is manifested into three forms of digital manifestation, namely textual, visual and audiovisual, which are packaged through data categorization. This process is explained theoretically through the Popular Culture and World Politics (PCWP) approach that views popular culture as a political “action” (doing politics), where the narrative “If we burn, you burn with us” is a nodal point that successfully binds and stabilizes various demands of pro-Palestinian activism into a digital protest action. This study concludes that popular culture is an effective medium for the articulation of collective identity politics in the era of digital activism.
