Abstract

Technological developments today have shaped beauty standards in society. This significantly impacts adolescents, as they are drawn to trends and obtain information from social media, particularly Instagram. Adolescents often experience body shaming due to physical and emotional changes, leading to low self-esteem, which in turn leads to a decline in self confidence. Self-confidence is an important factor in helping adolescents cope with social pressure and develop a positive self-image. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body shaming and the self-confidence of adolescents who use Instagram. This study was a quantitative study using a correlational method. Two scales were used the body shaming scale and the self-confidence scale. The study used an accidental sampling technique, and the sample size was 388 adolescents aged 13-21 who were active Instagram users and had experienced body shaming on Instagram. Based on the results of the pearson product moment correlation test, it was found that there was a negative relationship between body shaming and self-confidence in adolescent Instagram users with a value of (r = -0.703 and sig = 0.001 <0.05). This means that the higher the level of body shaming treatment received, the lower the self-confidence of teenagers who use Instagram.
