Abstract
Background: The skin is prone to a decline in function due to aging factors and environmental exposure. Topical preparations are commonly used for skin care; however, they may cause irritation, thus requiring safety evaluation. This study focuses on the irritation test of an emulgel formulation containing Ceramide and Corn Oil (Zea mays L.) as an antioxidant, with variations of Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 as the gelling agent. The skin safety of the formulation was evaluated through an irritation test to ensure its safe use.
Objective: To evaluate the irritation potential of emulgel preparations with varying concentrations of Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 as a gelling agent, containing Ceramide and corn oil (Zea mays L.) as active ingredients.
Methods: Four formulations, F0 without a gelling agent, F1 (0.5%), F2 (0.75%), and F3 (1%), were tested using the Draize Test method on male albino rabbits. The testing included a preliminary test and a main irritation test.
Results and Conclusion: The results of both preliminary and main tests showed that all formulas caused no erythema or edema up to 14 days of observation, with an irritation score of 0 and a PDII value of 0.0, classified as non-irritant according to the Draize Test. The formulations also had an average pH of 4.61, within the physiological skin range. Thus, emulgel containing Ceramide and corn oil with varying concentrations of Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 can be considered safe for topical use on rabbit skin (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
