Abstract

This study examines the impact of Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs policy on human security in the Philippines. This policy was launched at the beginning of Duterte's presidency in 2016 with the aim of reducing drug trafficking and use. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection through literature review. This study focused on three key aspects of human security that were most prominently impacted by the war on drugs policy: personal security, health security, and economic security. The results of this study indicate the impact of the war on drugs policy on human security, including decreased income for victims' families due to the loss of breadwinners or heads of households; the emergence of social stigma and bullying of victims' families, especially school-aged children; and a lack of health facilities and services due to a focus on punishment rather than treatment or rehabilitation. Overall, this policy has weakened human security in the Philippines, particularly among the underprivileged.
